Current PSP owners are going to be out of luck, as Sony has confirmed that the current users of the handheld that uses UMD’s, won’t be able to transfer UMD-based games onto the digital-only PSP Go.
The PSP Go doesn’t feature a UMD bay, but Sony had previously said it was considering ways of allowing UMD games to be transferred onto the PSP Go, where it was first mentioned at this year’s E3. Details of how Sony hoped to achieve this never emerged. But one method rumored to be under consideration by Sony, was thought to have a creation of in-store kiosks where gamers could swap a UMD-based game for a digital version of the same title.
However, Sony was quoted by saying that: “Due to legal and technical reasons we will not be offering the program at this time”.
Users who choose to upgrade to the PSP Go, will be forced to buy all their games through the console’s PlayStation Store and install them onto the system’s built in 16GB memory or removable memory card.
In my opinion, I think this is a big blow to Sony, because it’s not fair for current owners of the PSP like myself, to purchase a system that is digital download only and then pay for games I already own, and at full price.
We will just have to wait and see how the fans react, when the PSP Go launches on October 1st for $249.99.
