Nintendo President Satoru Iwata’s has recently came out by saying that he is unimpressed with 3D gaming, but it turns out that Nintendo had actually designed the Gamecube, which was released in 2001, with the ability to play 3D games.
The Gamecube was Nintendo’s console of the generation previous to the Wii. It didn’t exactly sell as well as Nintendo had hoped, selling fewer units than both of its major competitors, that included Microsoft’s Xbox and Sony’s PlayStation 2.
But, the Gamecube apparently had capabilities that went unused. Iwata was quoted by saying:”To tell you the truth, GameCube is secretly designed to load graphical circuits which display graphics for right and left eyes respectively, for a future possibility of realizing 3D gaming experience.” Nintendo already “had interest in this technology,” but decided against the use of it.
Iwata is excited about the prospect of 3D movies that would last for two hours, but his dislike for longer 3D gaming sessions could come from actual testing done with the Gamecube or earlier.
While Sony is talking 3D gaming and with Microsoft’s Project Natal scheduled for release later this year, Nintendo still believes that the world and gamers are not ready for 3D gaming yet. We will have to wait and see if 3D gaming and Project Natal will live up to the hype and the expectations of gamers.
