Gaming totems like Mario and Zelda affixed themselves to my childhood reverence. To me, these games were eternal, and each entry a rare event that warranted millennial celebration. A Link to the Past occupied the dusty plastic slot of my SNES for over a year, and Super Mario Bros. 3, as we all know, was video Armageddon. Their status continued into college, when upon receiving Wind Waker, I stuck it directly down my pants. It felt good, like coming home.
